Middlesbrough’s journey to the FA Cup quarter-finals has been nothing short of remarkable. A favorable 3rd round draw against League Two side Mansfield Town turned into a thrilling game when Middlesbrough blew a two-goal lead before breaking the stags’ hearts with a 95th-minute winner.

Then the promotion-seeking side took on Manchester Utd at Old Trafford in a game that most neutrals thought would be a convincing win for the home side. But Middlesbrough managed to respond to a 25th-minute goal from Jadon Sancho with a (rather lucky) goal from Matt Crooks, and the match was ultimately decided via a penalty shootout which was in favor of the visitors.

The team were then drawn against Tottenham in the 5th round, and were again struck out by many. For the second time, Boro seized the opportunity and after a nervous 90 minutes that ended in a stalemate, Josh Coburn found the net in extra time. A third draw against another top PL side seems hopelessly unlucky, but Middlesbrough have already proven they won’t be fazed by the odds or the opposition.

Chelsea’s run to that FA Cup quarter-final tie seems decidedly less special; the Champions League holders played and beat lower league sides Chesterfield, Plymouth Argyle and Luton Town, although Plymouth and Luton made the Blues work hard for those wins. Chelsea are undoubtedly the favorites in this match, but Middlesbrough will be their toughest test yet.

That match was also mired in controversy after Chelsea requested that it be played behind closed doors due to the club being sanctioned by the UK government and therefore unable to sell tickets. The request was eventually withdrawn, but the club faced a torrent of criticism for the arguably unsportsmanlike decision. Expect the Riverside Stadium crowd to raise their voices in protest.

In terms of squads, Middlesbrough are unchanged since their last game. Chelsea, unsurprisingly, remain a few players with an eye on the Premier League and Champions League tests ahead of them. Romelu Lukaku arrives on the front line alongside Christian Pulisic, with Kai Havertz falling to the bench. Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Hakim Ziyech and Malang Sarr are also in the starting lineup.

Here’s how they line up:

Middlebrough: Lumley, Anfernee Dijksteel, McNair, Fry, Jones, Crooks, Howson, Tavernier, Taylor, Balogun, Connolly.

Chelsea: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Mount, Sarr, Ziyech, Pulisic, Lukaku.

A cup upset doesn’t seem so far-fetched in this one, and it would be a special occasion if Middlesbrough were to bring down another Premier League giant. Can they start over? Find out with the Middlesbrough vs Chelsea live stream.
